HERO (Health Exploration Resources and Opportunities) is a no-cost online mentoring program for Vermont teens in grades 9-12 living in Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orleans, Orange, and Washington Counties.
Students are paired 1-on-1 with trained volunteer medical students. HERO is a unique opportunity for students to explore health careers, human anatomy and physiology, disease etiology, and community health topics. Sessions are scheduled by the participant and mentor once per week from October to December.
The program aims to enhance science achievement and postsecondary pathway planning. Participation in the program is limited and selection is based on demonstrated interest in health and medicine and ability to commit to the full duration of the program. There are no academic prerequisites, and no prior knowledge or experience is required.
