Pre-registration is open for the HERO Mentoring Program coming this fall! HERO stands for Health Exploration Resources and Opportunities. This is a no-cost, four-month, 1-to-1 online mentoring program for Vermont students from northern Vermont who will be in grades 9 through 12 in the next academic year. HERO Mentoring pairs high school students with volunteer medical students trained in mentoring and STEM education. The goal of the program is to support science achievement and postsecondary pathway planning for youth interested in careers in health and medicine. We envision this program as a unique opportunity for interested students who may not otherwise have access to health career enrichment.
Students in the HERO Mentoring Program engage with their mentors in ten enrichment modules: one focused on health career exploration, one focused on goal setting, and eight modules focused on human biology and health science. These sessions are scheduled at a times that works best for the student and mentor, from October to January.
The program is open to students residing in Caledonia, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orleans, Orange, Washington, and Chittenden Counties. HERO applications open in August 2023. Application for the HERO Mentoring program is competitive, and based on participants’ demonstrated interest in health and medicine and commitment to the full duration of the program. There are no academic prerequisites, and no prior knowledge or experience is required.
If you think you might be interested in joining the HERO Mentoring Program, complete a super-quick pre-registration online. We will contact you as soon as applications open for the 2023-2024 academic year.
