What you might do
Advanced Practice Nursing includes several specialties for nurses with advanced education and skills.
- Nurse Practitioners (NPs) care for patients in many of the same ways a doctor does. They examine, diagnose, and treat patients. In Vermont, NPs can practice independently.
- Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) care for women, especially during pregnancy and childbirth.
- Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) give anesthesia to patients to numb a part of the body or to put the patients to sleep for surgery. They also monitor patients under anesthesia and during recovery.
- Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) direct other nurses in the care of patients. They help design and evaluate systems to improve patient care.

Education Required
Advanced Practice Nurses hold an RN license and at least a master’s degree (2 years after a 4-year bachelor’s degree). Some APNs hold doctoral degrees (PhD or DNP).
